Set in the 1990’s, we find that earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. It’s up to Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), our newest hero into the MCU, to save the day.
So like most people, I was completely unfamiliar with this character. Although she’s been in the comics for some time now, she’s never been a mainstream one. Now she steps front and center in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the first FEMALE super hero to lead a movie. Interesting enough though… I have seen this movie before, but in a DC film that starred Ryan Reynolds.
Granted I’m a fan of the Green Lantern, and was one of the few that thought the movie was ok. When I was watching Captain Marvel, I quickly learned that the characters have a whole lot in common and so did their movies.
Both were military pilots that were given their abilities from alien technology. He has a ring and she has blasters that come out of her hands. Both can fly in outer space without the use of a spaceship. They belong(ed) to a group of “space military” hero’s that travel throughout the galaxy. And if you’ve seen the GL movie, without spoiling it, you’ll probably find a whole lot of parallel moments in Captain Marvel.
Now that being said, what’s most important, Captain Marvel is a much better movie than the Green Lantern. Brie Larson, had me pleasantly surprised taking up the superhero mantel. The story was pretty simple, and a nice introduction for those of us who know little or nothing about this hero. I liked getting to see some face’s we’ve already come to know and love from previous MCU films, but now they’re a lot younger. And we kinda get to learn about their past as well.
Like the Ant-Man movies, Captain Marvel, at this point, isn’t at the level of Iron Man or Captain America, but since she is to be the leader of this next phase of the MCU, I liked what I watched and am excited to see where she goes from here.
