In a time where movie studios are holding back on releasing their big budget films, it’s the smaller studios, with films you probably would have never heard of, that are helping give people a sense of normalcy by releasing brand new movies through Video On Demand. One new movie coming out this weekend, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, is one of those small budget films that has a small cast of actors, that you’ve never heard of before, that takes a well written story and creates a really good film that you normally would have past on.
First off, we have to mention our lead performer in this one, Sidney Flanigan, who plays Autumn, a 17 year old girl from a small town in Pennsylvania that learns she’s pregnant. As far as I can tell, this is her first role in anything. But right out of the gate, she delivers one outstanding performance. Her soft spoken dialog was still able to convey one powerful performance about a very tough subject… Abortion.
Because the subject is really touchy, props have to be given to writer/director, Eliza Hittman. She found a way to tell this story so that you care about your characters, and the tough journey they have to take. Having Autumn’s cousin, Skylar (Talia Ryder), being her support in this actually seemed like that’s how it would really be, if this was based on a true story. Small town’s, your best friend is usually a relative.
Even though I’m pretty sure I’m not the target audience for this film, I really found myself emotionally involved. It was interesting because it is kind of a slow paced film, and I, early on, kept wanting it to speed up. Then I realized that that’s exactly what Autumn want’s too. To hurry up and get this over with. But along the way, she finds obstacles that are slowing her down…. I remember, when I realized that, I was like… Damn, You Got Me. LoL
Since you really have no where else to go this weekend, or anytime soon, take a chance to see this one. Don’t let it be one of those really good movies you just overlooked.
